Google has increased its wave of ad appearances in AI Mode. If you’ve searched anything on Google recently, you’ve undoubtedly experienced their “AI Mode” search results. While this new feature has new opportunities, it also poses challenges for businesses. Ads are appearing within the AI search results.

What Does This Mean For You?

If your business relies on being discoverable in search, AI ads provide another opportunity for you, or your competitors, to be found.

For example, if a user asks Google, “Who is the Best HVAC company in Arizona?” The AI Mode results may start displaying paid ads directing users to those who have paid to advertise. Those paid placements are marked as “Sponsored”.

Traditional Google Vs. AI Ads

Placement: Traditional ads appear above or below search results. Ads in AI Mode appear above, below, or within the AI summary answer.

Ad Targeting: Targeting focuses more on the context of the user’s query and AI’s results content versus keywords. It is recommended to use Performance Max for successful AI mode Ad appearances.

Intent: Google Ads in AI mode targets users who are still in discovery/research phase versus users with immediate buying intent.

How to Start Advertising in AI Mode

AI mode ads are in the early stages. Google has not provided clear instructions but recommends using “Performance Max” or “AI Max” search campaigns to see successful appearances of your ads. Digital Marketing is just one small area that AI is changing for businesses.
