Looking back on 2024, the threat environment has grown increasingly complex. Several major breaches provided critical cybersecurity lessons for 2025.
Major Breaches in 2024
- April 2024 – Snowflake Supply Chain Attack: This attack disrupted major clients like Ticketmaster and AT&T. These clients relied on a third-party database that was breached.
- Lesson Learned: Managing third-party risks is crucial in today’s digital ecosystem.
- April – Summer 2024 – National Public Data (NPD) Breach: An employee background check company was breached, leading to its bankruptcy. Personal information from millions of people was stolen.
- Lesson learned: Businesses have an obligation to protect sensitive information, and individuals need to be prepared for that data to become compromised.
- July 2024 – CrowdStrike: An untested update to a security tool was pushed out, causing PCs around the world to shut down.
- Lesson Learned: While not technically a breach, this worldwide shutdown highlights the need for business continuity/disaster recovery plans.
These are just a few of the many breaches that occurred last year, but they all highlight the same thing; cyber threats are real, and businesses must be prepared to take them on! Let’s all resolve to make 2025 the most secure year yet!
